‘Canes fall just short
The C.M Wright Mustangs came back from a two-run deficit to defeat the Huntingtown Hurricanes 3-2 in a matchup of two of the state’s top 3A teams on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingtown High.
Wright (8-0), regarded as possibly the top team in the state, had shut out four consecutive opponents entering the game. Huntingtown (8-2) ensured the streak would not grow to five early, as Joe Karbowsky led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on Chris Gaines’ ground out later in the inning. Later, Brian Warner led off the second inning with a solo homer off of Wright’s Bobby Ruse to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
But the visitors got their bats rolling in the fourth, as Andrew Clow took a Spencer Wolfe offering over the right-field fence for a solo shot. In the fifth, the Mustangs scored two runs with two outs to leapfrog ahead to the eventual game-winning margin.
Ruse went the distance to earn the win on the mound. The Wright hurler allowed five hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Wolfe worked six innings for the Hurricanes, surrendered four hits, walked two and struck out 10.
