McDonough slips by Huntingtown
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and facing a 1-2 count, McDonough’s Molly Simpson lashed a single to right to score Katelyn Westerfield from third and lift the Rams to a 4-3 win over the visiting Huntingtown Hurricanes in an anticipated softball game on Friday afternoon.
McDonough (4-1, 2-0) had led 3-0 and seemed in firm control after five innings, but Huntingtown came back to score a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to create a more dramatic finish.
Jazzmyn Hayden was impressive on the mound for the Rams and took a no-hitter into the sixth. Hayden struck out 10, walked none and allowed four hits. But of those four hits, two went for extra bases and Jess Warner and Ayla Santos each clobbered RBI doubles as the Hurricanes made their comeback bid.
McDonough bashed out nine hits, with Westerfield and Simpson leading the way with two each. Hayden was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Samantha Kruemmel was 1 for 3 with two runs driven in. Westerfield was 2 for 2 and scored three of the Rams’ runs.
McDonough 4, Huntingtown 3
H 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 — 3 4 0
M 0 0 1 0 2 0 1 — 4 8 3
