With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the eighth, Abby Orlandi’s infield pop found its way to the ground despite a valiant, diving effort by Kaitlyn Seger to push Erin Adams across the plate with the winning run in Northern’s 5-4 win over the visting Huntingtown Hurricanes on Friday.

Northern (12-0) had trailed 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. After the half-inning’s first two batters were retired, Orlandi, Kaitlyn Schmeiser and Tayler Schaefer produced three consecutive singles to set the stage for freshman Kierstie Schaefer. The freshman did not disappoint, drilling a grand slam over the center-field fence.

Huntingtown (7-2) chipped away to get a run back in the sixth, then tied the game on Angela Sita’s two-out, two-strike RBI single in the seventh. The Hurricanes then had runners on second and third in the top of the eighth, but Northern pitcher Lindsey Schmeiser came up with a clutch strikeout to come away unscathed.
