Northern holds off Stone

Kaitlyn Schmeiser hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to account for all of the Northern Patriots’ runs in a 2-1 win over the Thomas Stone Cougars on Thursday afternoon.

Schmeiser, who started on the mound for Northern, worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the top half of the first. Then, with Lindsey Schmeiser aboard with one out in the bottom half, Kaitlyn Schmeiser unloaded a shot over the center-field fence, then promptly left the game — she had been struck by a line drive in the first inning but appeared to be OK.

Lindsey Schmeiser took over pitching duties, and after allowing a lead-off single to Alexis Albert in the second, retired the next 16 batters in order. Stone finally got a rally started with one out in the seventh and scored a run, but the Patriots were able to slam the door.
