Kara Holtzman blasted a bases-loaded single to drive home Lizzie Shaw with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh of Patuxent’s 2-1 win over visiting Calvert in a 2A South first-round softball matchup on Thursday afternoon.

Each team scored a run in the second, but remained tied until the bottom of the final frame. Calvert (7-12) threatened in the fourth with a runner on third and just one out, but Michelle Lorenzon made a sensational, diving catch on a shot off Erin Lanham’s bat to prevent the tenth-seeded Cavaliers from pushing the go-ahead run across.

Patuxent (10-9), the region’s No. 7 seed, put its first three batters on base in its half of the seventh, bringing Holtzman to the plate with what became the game-winning at-bat. The Panthers advance to play second seed Frederick Douglass on Monday.
