Patriots fall to South River
After one of the most successful seasons in program history, the SMAC-champion Northern Patriots boys lacrosse team saw its season come to end Monday night. Despite fighting back to close to within three goals in the second half, the Patriots fell 15-6 to the visiting South River Seahawks in a 4A/3A East semifinal.
South River (14-2), the defending 4A/3A champ and the region’s No. 3 seed, scored the game’s first five goals to lead 5-0 just 1 minute 11 seconds into the second period. The Seahawks extended the lead to 7-1 at the half before second-seeded Northern (13-3) got rolling in the third quarter.
After South River’s Nick Pappas scored to open the second half, Northern reeled off five of the next six goals to close to 9-6 with 1:16 remaining in the third. But South River responded with a goal 10 seconds later and then closed the door by outscoring the Patriots 5-0 over the final period.
David Matusek scored twice to lead the Patriots, while Kevin Fleming, Philip Taylor, Chris Baxa and Scott Paolino each contributed a goal.
South River advances to play Severna Park in the regional final.
