Lindsey Schmeiser’s bloop hit to right field pushed the winning run across in the Northern Patriots’ 2-1 win over the visiting Huntingtown Hurricanes in Friday’s 3A South final. The regional crown was the third in the row for Northern, which now sets its sights on claiming a third straight 3A state championship.

Northern (22-1) scored a run in the top of the first to take the early lead, but Huntingtown (16-4) answered in the third when Jess Warner’s infield single scored Angela Sita from second.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser limited Huntingtown to five hits, and logged eight strikeouts on the day. Northern advances to play 3A West champ Blake (15-3) in the state semifinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie.

In another Huntingtown-Northern matchup on Friday, the Hurricanes made quick work of the Patriots in an 11-1 drubbing in the 3A South baseball final. Huntingtown starting pitcher Matt Beyer twice worked out of bases-loaded situations during his five innings on the bump. The Hurricanes’ offense exploded for nine runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run homer by Chris Gaines.

The win earned Huntingtown its first regional title since 2007, and third in the last five years to go along with three SMAC championships over that span. The Hurricanes are scheduled to play 3A West champion Quince Orchard Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium.
