COLLEGE PARK — The Northern Patriots entered Friday night’s 3A softball championship game at Robert E. Taylor Stadium as the two-time, defending champions. They didn’t wait long to let everybody know the number of consecutive championships was going to grow to three.

Northern scored 10 first-inning runs to deliver the early knockout blow to the Charles Milton Wright Mustangs in what ended an 11-0 Patriots win. Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser allowed two hits, walked none and struck out nine in earning her third state-championship win in as many seasons.

Schmeiser also fueled the offense, going 3 for 3 and coming up just a homer short of a cycle. The Patriots banged out 10 hits, and did not make an out in the first until the ninth batter came to the plate.

The win marks Northern’s seventh state championship, now the most of any SMAC programs.
